We Celebrate 75 Years Of Soap Making

1936 - 2011

This year marks CLARITY's 75th year in soap manufacturing. As the result of an initiative by Captain Sir Beachcroft Towse in 1936, "The Incorporated Association for Promoting the General Welfare of the Blind" as we were known then, branched out from traditional blind handicrafts such as basket and brush making.

Later this month we are set to launch a set of six commemorative soaps to mark the anniversary. In the meantime, here is a section of some of the original 1936 soap marketing literature. Whilst a few of the fragrances exist in our range today, most really show their age; Coal Tar or Carbolic soap anyone?! We have been working with our fragrance supplier to ensure that our new range is the shape of things to come in terms of scents.

Carbolic, Carnation, Castile, Coal Tar, Cold Cream, Lavender, Buttermilk...

More from our archives can be seen on our facebook page.

UPDATE: Our 75th Anniversary soap collection is available to purchase here

CLARITY Feature in the Sunday Mirror

May 2011

CLARITY have had some local newspaper success recently, but when it comes to national newspaper coverage we haven't had something this big for a while. Quentin Willson, the Sunday Mirror's Motoring Correspondent wrote a small article pushing CLARITY's 'Turbo' car cleaning kit in the Sunday Mirror newspaper. 3 million readers will hopefully take a look at our site and make a purchase. We are also due to feature in Fiona Phillips' Saturday column and the Sun guide for Father's Day gifts this June.

Here is the article in full:

Big Society Initiative sees CLARITY at the forefront

May 2011

CLARITY hosted the launch of a major UK wide initiative at an event on Tuesday 24th May. We joined forces with over 180 other charities and groups that make and sell products to fund their good works in launching JustBuy at www.JustBuy.org.uk which is a directory of likeminded social firms. The 180 firms are from all across the UK and make and sell everything from cup cakes to road signs.

CLARITY Needs Your Support for London Marathon

April 2011

With the sunny weather finally upon us, one person has another reason to hope it won't rain this weekend. Louise Bennett of Northamptonshire, is running the 2011 Virgin London Marathon on behalf of CLARITY - Employment for Blind People. To support her efforts we are looking to raise money through selling our top quality toiletry and home cleaning products, rather than yet another sponsorship form for cash donations. This way, as always with CLARITY, you get something in return for your charitable donation.

With the invaluable assistance of MPM2 Promotional Merchandise we have launched the fundraising microsite:

www.clarity-fundraising.org

We will invest the profit in putting more people through our vocational training scheme, Work Visions.

You may have noticed that our Gift Sets are able to celebrate the New Year in style after being re-photographed by the great people at The Packshot Factory. We wanted to show off the products as best as possible, as we believe they offer the perfect combination of great personal care products and charitable giving. One of the fantastic new shots can be seen below, but to take a look at the rest and browse our great Gift Set selection, click here.

GLFB Interview Stephen

October 2010

If you have ever phoned the CLARITY London office, chances are you will have spoken to our receptionist, Stephen Steppens. The Greater London Fund for the Blind (GLFB) quickly realised that the ever-chatty Mr Steppens would be a great candidate for an interview regarding his interests and lifestyle as a blind person keeping up with today's technology. We have included a few extracts below, but if you have time, please take a moment to read the first section of the interview on the GLFB Blog, here. The GLFB will be updating the blog with further interview extracts in the coming weeks.

"Stephen's three passions are gadgets, guide dogs and Doctor Who and here he explains about his latest gadget to help him get around – the Trekker Breeze GPS."

“If you work, you can buy things like that on a credit card and pay it back over a period of time. If you’re on the dole or on benefits, there’s no way you can do that.”

 Stephen Steppens, CLARITY Receptionist
